Hits and Myths
Since its inception a few years ago, the mavens of Net marketing have promised the world to online consumers: "one-to-one" relationships and offers tailored to your every taste or preference; pop-up ads, "interstitial" ads, and banner ads of every stripe tailored to your data profile; emails crammed with ads themselves; and so on. And they screamed loud enough--on television ads and billboards around the country--for everyone to hear. Truth is, the multimillion-dollar dot-com marketing budgets still haven't delivered much bang for their buck, and Wall Street and consumers are losing patience. Here's a look at what's working, what's not, and the people behind the scenes of online marketing who are driving change.

i-Byte your Cents Off
With GPRS on its way, the wireless internet industry is gearing up to switch to a pay-for-what-you-download style of billing. This model is being pioneered in Japan by NTT DoCoMo's i-Mode service. As the mobile phone carriers rub their hands with glee at the prospect of increased billing, what does paying for what you download mean for usability?

Style vs. design
When Style is a fetish, sites confuse visitors, hurting users and the companies that paid for the sites. When designers don't start by asking who will use the site, and what they will use it for, we get meaningless eye candy that gives beauty a bad name — at least, in some circles.

A List Apart: Experience Design
Incorporating in design practice the knowledge provided by ethnographers, phenomenologists (scientists of "experience"), sociologists, psychologists, historians, storytellers, and other design disciplines is another challenge facing designers. Experience design is a wildly popular new paradigm that may provide a solution. Experience designers strive to create desired perceptions, cognition, and behavior among users, customers, visitors, or the audience. Experience designers of many specializations successfully work with each other and with non-design professionals. There are real synergies in cross-disciplinary design.

Are People Getting Stuck In Your GUI?
Every time I see a website that sucks, I can hear the background banter of its developers and programmers. “So it's not completely obvious,” they’re saying. “It's not that hard. Let them figure it out. They'll get used to it." These dudes sure put a lot of faith in the patience, motivation and resiliency of their visitors!

Dr. Strangeglobe: Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love The W3C
Strangeglobe continued, "When we don't have rules, chaos reigns. When chaos reigns, web designers are beating their heads against the monitor in anxiety and deep frustration."
May I recommend ...? Not!
Recommendation technology, at least the way it's applied on most sites, suffers from a fatal flaw: the past purchase experience. Much can be gained from experience, but that kind of intelligence doesn't mean much to me, the purchaser. If I bought a book or CD, I don't need another one just like it. But if I did, I'm smart enough to know how to find a related title, since I was smart enough to find the original item in the first place.

A Message to Web Designers: If It Ain't Broke, Don't Fix It
"People have an understandable and justifiable preference for what they're accustomed to," said Scott Rosenberg, vice president of site development and managing editor of Salon. "They don't want to be bothered to learn new ways of doing things -- and unless you can make clear to them that a new way is superior to the old, familiar way, why should they?"

Aggregating Experience
Big end-to-end service providers like AOL Time Warner EMI have the opportunity to use their corporate size to communicate faster and exact better control over their designs, in comparison to competitors forming loose business alliances. Consequently delivering better product with a better user experience leading to higher usage and greater revenues. In an internet world where one leading player can quickly become a dominant force or even a virtual monopoly holder, you have to predict that the company that gets it right will dominate the market.
