Schoonheidscommunity

Astounding websites is een community waar iedereen een website mag voordragen, die hij/zij mooi of interessant vindt. Ondanks een wopper van een plaatje op de homepage is de site een interessante plek om de betere design/content sites op het web tegen te komen.

Creating Core Content in a Post-Convergence World

Today, content production is underfunded and under siege from the failing revenue models of advertising and transactions. Convergence is many things: media, form, style, content, technology. It is also economics. From television to the web, the unsatisfying economic models underlying today's media are even less likely to map successfully to convergent media. Business innovation is as important as technological invention. We face a crisis in content-who will make it, how will it be paid for, and what will it be worth in a new media world?

How Corporates Poison their Own Web Efforts

Corporates still don't 'get it' about the Internet. The big corporations that have the powerful brands and funds to make powerful, profitable ecommerce Internet businesses seem to shoot themselves in the foot more often than they get it right. What it boils down to is that the Web culture that makes for a great Internet development team is simply indigestible for most corporates - they just can't stand to see Webbies having fun, being creative, turning corporate culture and imperatives on their heads - even if it does make lots of money.

Does your fridge know how much you weigh today?

Likewise, we don't need a refrigerator that knows when it's out of milk. We already have a foolproof system for determining if we're out of milk: We ask our wife. What we could use is a refrigerator that refuses to let us open its door when it senses that we are about to consume our fourth Jell-O Pudding Snack in two hours.

The State of XML

Attempting to describe the state of XML is an ambitious undertaking, and my paper in the proceedings covers a lot more than I'm able to say today. In particular, I wanted to bring out some interesting developments in XML that will be impacting us over the next few years.

Een interview met David Carson

With a peculiar knack for saying the obvious truths that nobody wants to hear, Carson has attracted a wild degree of controversy — and legions of fans and detractors. Throughout it all, he has remained at heart a California surfer, an adventurous type who loves travel, outdoor sports, and, by the way, really cool type.

Leedvermaak

FuckedCompany.com is a game based on the classic deadpool, but instead of betting for (or against) people, you're betting on companies. The lines are a little blurred when dealing with companies because there is rarely a clean-cut death. To make up for this, FuckedCompany.com rates different levels of a company's demise and awards points based on the level of severity.

If They Don't Test, Don't Hire Them

The single best indicator as to the overall competence of an interaction design team is their plan for user testing. If you are presented with no plan or a sort of vague “and we’ll eventually do some user testing,” you may want to back off and look at other resources. If, on the other hand, you are given a proposal outlining repeated design and test cycles, you are dealing with people who know exactly what they are doing.

PIX column :: Zeldman's second site

There are two World Wide Webs: the Web of personal CREATIVE expression that remains democratically available to all, and the Web of big business that drives the new economy. The big-business Web is the child of big-business agencies. Since Adweek magazine recently published its list of the Top 100 Interactive Agencies, let's examine the sites of some of those big guns and see if they help explain the companies' successes. More importantly, since most huge corporate sites are practically interchangeable, let's see if the companies that make those sites are equally interchangeable.

Content vs. Connectivity

We must allow for a marketplace by preventing players with interests opposed to connectivity from controlling connectivity. It is a dramatic case of conflict of interest and antitrust violation. We cannot afford to tolerate such behavior. It is allowed and abetted by accepting the self-serving fallacies of the existing players. We must put a lie to their claims and create the opportunities so necessary for our continued prosperity.

Spammer gepakt

After Rodona Garst forged his domain on millions of spam, a hacker waited for her next bulk e-mail, broke into her laptop as it was being sent and downloaded all the information he could. He has published the files, including ICQ transcripts of Garst participating in pump-and-dump stock scams, a file containing 1,300 stolen AOL accounts, and two ill-advised nude photos. [via Cruel]
