Chicks suck
While the author's a tad whiney, won't post a photo of himself because he claims his parents are white trash, picks on pretty much everything around him, and can't get laid unless he lowers his standards to include girls he's not attracted to, he's also honest, intelligent, amusing, observant, and not all that offensive, which is more than we can say for ourselves sometimes.

Steve Double
Ik weet niet meer hoe ik precies op de site ben terecht gekomen maar de fotogallerie van Steve Double geeft een mooi overzicht van het werk dat de Engelse fotograaf de afgelopen jaren heeft afgeleverd.
Zijn werk voor Wired kende ik, maar niet alleen digerati zijn z'n pad gekruisd. De foto's van o.a. de Afghan Whigs, één van m'n favoriete bands, en van Umberto Eco laten de verscheidenheid aan personen en onderwerpen zien, die de fotograaf heeft vastgelegd.

International Standard ISO 8601 specifies numeric representations of date and time. This standard notation helps to avoid confusion in international communication caused by the many different national notations and increases the portability of computer user interfaces. In addition, these formats have several important advantages for computer usage compared to other traditional date and time notations. The time notation described here is already the de-facto standard in almost all countries and the date notation is becoming increasingly popular.

Breedband...
DEN, een internet entertainement bedrijf, heeft deze week de deuren gesloten. Ondanks DEN en Microsoft's mislukte avonturen met internet-TV, heeft Veronica grootse plannen op het gebied van breedband programmering.
De belofte van breedbanddiensten worden door een groot aantal bedrijven al jaren gedaan, maar een aantal bakken er op dit moment weinig van.
Breedband aanbod via de kabel verloopt niet probleemloos, lees het relaas van Casema(Wannadoo) abonnees en Troubles@Home.
Nu moet ADSL, een techniek die een hogere datatransmissiesnelheid via de telefoonlijn mogelijk maakt, de uitkomst gaan bieden. Maar ook de invoering van breedband diensten via ADSL verloopt verre van vlekkeloos.
In Frankrijk en de V.S. kunnen abonnees hier over mee praten.
Breedband is een mooie belofte, maar in de realiteit blijkt, dat het meer dan wenselijk is, de verkooppraatjes van de verschillende 'breedband' aanbieders, met een korreltje zout te nemen.

For too long, developers have been enamored with the technologies — even seduced by them. They do things because it is "cool" or novel or curious. Often times, these things make their Web sites — if not their company — perform poorly, but they can't see it because they only see technology. The best solution for your IT department isn't the most elegant technology — it's the one that's best for the people you serve. A Web Site User Model Should at Least Model Something About Users
Een kritisch artikel de software-agent Max van Webcriteria, dat volgens de makers surfgedrag van mensen kan voorspellen. Peter Pirolli, onderzoeker bij Xerox, laat weinig heel van de claims van het bedrijf.
Het begint er op te lijken dat 'usability in a box' een trend begint te worden. Het bedrijf Usablenet biedt een softwareprogramma aan dat de gebruiksvriendelijkheid van een website test. Met Lift Online kun je één pagina van een willekeurige website onder de loep laten nemen. Het programma kwam met een aantal aanbevelingen, die zeer bruikbaar bleken voor de net vernieuwde homepage van de Lijst.

Clerks
Vanaf 31 mei zal een cartoonversie van de geestige film Clerks te zien zijn bij de Amerikaanse zender ABC.
Clerks is een extreme low budget film -(gemaakt voor $27,575 om prescies te zijn)- over twee winkelbedienden, die zijn blijven hangen na de middelbare school. De film zit vol met grappige overpijnzingen over het leven en is kurkdroog wat humor betreft.
Quote uit de film: 'This job would be great if it wasn't for the fucking customers.'

Ever since the Internet went commercial, a privacy battle has raged. E-business sites want to know more and more about their users so they can target newsletters, advertising, and content organization. In the face of spam, cookies, and other privacy assaults, users are more confused and suspicious and less willing to share information.
In response to the issue, the W3C (World Wide Web Consortium) developed P3P (the Platform for Privacy Preferences Project), a recommendation to strengthen the capabilities of privacy policies. Using XML and relying on third-party watchdogs for enforcement, P3P standardizes how sites present their data-collection practices and helps users to understand how sites treat private information.

'Geluk bestaat niet. Pech trouwens ook niet. Gebeurtenissen volgen elkaar op, gewoonlijk in een regelmatig verlopend patroon. Zoals in een caleidoscoop waarin de gekleurde glazen stukjes de figuren bepalen. Mysterieuze krachten laten de stukjes toevallig op hun plaats vallen en zo neemt het mozaïek telkens andere vormen aan. Het toeval brengt soms geluk. Of pech.'

UK's slowest sites named and shamed
Some of Britain's slowest e-commerce sites have been named and shamed in a study that warns that e-commerce revenues could be hit unless e-businesses do more to improve page-serving performance. The CacheFlow study found that Net users in Britain typically have to wait an average of 28 seconds for a Web page to download from an e-commerce site, and that waits of two or three times this figure are not untypical.

Weer een nieuwe zoekdienst!
Makers van The Brain, een programma dat informatie organiseert en presenteert, zoals het menselijke brein dit blijkbaar ook doet, hebben de aansprekende interface gekoppeld aan een webindex.
Echt veel toevoegen doet de zoekdienst niet, maar het ziet er in ieder geval interessant uit! De zoekmachine gebruikt het Open Directory Project als index.
Feedmag schreef 2 jaar geleden een aardig artikel over de theorie en de werking van het softwareprogramma.

Vandaag in het nieuws.....
Nederland is een nieuwe zoekmachine rijker. Metamonster stelt je in staat om bij ruim 500 verschillende zoekmachines en in 20 verschillende talen op het Internet te zoeken. Ik heb de dienst geprobeerd en ik kan alleen maar zeggen, dat de column van Francisco van Jole afgelopen vrijdag in de Volkskrant, getiteld 'Digitale woestijn', ook hier op van toepassing is. Het enige wat deze 'zoekmachine' doet is je zoekvraag presenteren op een pagina, die doorverwijst naar de bekende zoekmachines en webdirectories. Pfff, als dat de toegevaagde waarde is die geld moet opbrengen.....
Natuurlijk is het bedrijf ook van plan om betaalde links op te nemen, maar zeggen ze uitdrukkelijk, dit zal wel duidelijk worden aangegeven.
