| Links: Issues of Page Representation and Organisation in Web Browser’s Revisitation Tools
In this paper, we examine two fundamental design and usability issues that all graphical tools for revisitation must address. First, how can individual pages be represented to best support page identification? We discuss the problems and prospects of various page representations: the pages themselves, image thumbnails, text labels, and abstract page properties. Second, what display organisation schemes can be used to enhance the visualisation of large sets of previously visited pages? We compare temporal organisations, hub-and spoke dynamic trees, spatial layouts and site maps. [OZCHI'99- Andy Cockburn and Saul Greenberg 11/1999] PDF-file

Sitemaps may help users conceptualize the framework of a website and enable them to become more efficient in finding information. For this reason, it is becoming more common to see sitemaps within websites. However, it seems as though each website follows a different sitemap design. In an attempt to sort out which sitemap design is most appropriate, we compared search performance with three of the major types of sitemap designs.

"Where am I?", is said to be the first question maps should answer. On the net, it competes with "What else is there?" I believe the most important thing to consider when building a sitemap is what kind of experience do you want to give the user.

“Where am I?” This is a question asked by most of us when we get dumped into the middle of a large Web site by a search engine, often followed by, “What else is available on this site?” and, “How do I get there?” The Web site map is one of the key tools that site designers can provide to help surfers answer these questions and successfully navigate through their site. However, the art and science of creating intuitive and useful Web site maps is still in its infancy.
