Navigation design is one of the trickiest areas of site development. It's tricky partly because it's so subjective—everyone seems to have a different opinion of what works. It's also tricky because it's hugely important from a usability perspective. If your site's navigation isn't doing what it should, you risk losing visitors.

In this paper we show how to improve the architecture of Web Information Systems (WISs) using design patterns, in particular navigational patterns. We first present a framework to reason about the process of designing and implementing these applications. Then we introduce navigational patterns and show some prototypical patterns. We next show how these patterns have been used in some successful WIS. Finally we explain how patterns are integrated into the development process of WIS.

According to the latest language stats from Global Reach, as of February 2000, an estimated 109 million users accessed the Internet in languages other than English. Many of these people read basic English, but over the next 12 months we'll begin to see a huge wave of new users who don't speak or read any English. Right now, the Internet is a proven venue for buying and selling just about anything—in English. To reach these newcomers, those setting up e-commerce sites will have to duplicate all these successes and more in different languages. E-commerce occurs when there is trust, and both language and cultural sensitivity create trust.

People are always asking me, "What's the best site on the Web?" My response is "There is no best site because the best site is the one that as soon as someone clicks a link to go there, money is automatically sucked out of their wallet."

We like to think we at Web Review know the ins and outs of making Web pages work. However, since you can never be too careful, we decided to consult the experts. We read Information Architecture for the World Wide Web, Louis Rosenfeld and Peter Morville's excellent book about designing large sites. Then we took an advance peek at Jennifer Fleming's upcoming book, Web Navigation: Designing the User Experience. Finally, we hit the Web itself and checked out Jakob Nielsen's collected usability wisdom from the Alertbox column. When we were all done reading, we figured out a set of navigation and usability rules. These rules aren't written in stone, and it's hard to follow all 12 of them at once. However, it helps to be aware of them so you can make the best design decisions for your own site.

Welcome to the world of the Error 404 page. You’ve requested a page — either by typing a URL directly into the address bar or clicking on an out-of-date link and you’ve found yourself in the middle of cyberspace nowhere. A user-friendly website will give you a helping hand while many others will simply do nothing, relying on the browser’s built-in ability to explain what the problem is. We can do better than that, can’t we? [AlistApart 16/01/2004]
